Season 2005/06
Deeping kept up the charge for league honours with a comfortable win against a team they find hard to beat every season. The Clarets started the game well, but credit to Netherton who had been unlucky against leaders Eye the previous week. They stuck to the task with the backline and keeper having a good half keeping the score down to 3 – 0 at the interval. The second half started much the same, but Netherton did pull a goal back as Deeping switched off for a few minutes. Goalscorers were Jacob Peters with a double – one of which was a terrific volley from a Nick Harrold cross – Ben Watson, Ben Leisner, Dan Evans and Dan Bandaranaike. Special mention goes to Sam Bush and Jonny Landin who both had a superb game in the Deeping defence. Manager Mel Landin said:”This was a great result against a team who always raise their game against us.”
Deeping U12’s 6 Abbey U12’s 1
This was a game neither team cold afford to lose if they were to win league honours. Abbey started the match by hitting the Clarets crossbar three times in the first 10 minutes, but this seemed to wake Deeping up as they went in at half time 3 – 0 up. Deeping came out for the second half playing good attacking football which was mixed with solid defending and saw them get a further three goals. The Deeping scorers were Dan Evans and Liam Buttery with two apiece and one each from Ben Watson and Jacob Peters all of which were well taken goals. This win allows Rangers to start gaining points on the leaders in what has been a fantastic season so far. Special mention to Steffan Ladley and Jacob Peters who had outstanding games
22 January 2006: Boston U12s 2 Deeping rangers U12’s 10
Deeping got a big shock against the bottom side Boston by going two goals behind within three minutes of the start. It took the away team a while to get started but some good finishing made sure Deeping went in at half time 5 – 2 ahead. Deeping played better football in the second half to get another five. There were some excellent golas scored by Dan Evans (4), Jacob Peters (3), Dan Bandaranaike (2), and a lovely freekick from Tom Thurston. Peters and ladley both had excellent games. Deeping missed a lot of chances due to a combination of poor finishing and some superb saves from the Boston keeper who had a great game from Start to finish. Deeping tried players in different positions and manager Mel Landin said :”We created but missed a lot of chances but got three points. This season, whilst like a lot of teams we would love to win the league, the developmenmt and enjoyment of the boys is the most important thing.” “If we were told at the beginning of the season we would be in the latter stages of county and league cup as well as in with a chance of the top three in the league we would have been very happy the boys have done us proud.”
Deeping: James, Bush, Thurston, Landin, Leisner, Waters, Ladley, Peters, Lovesey, Bandaranaike, Harrold, Wheeler, Evans.
25 September 2005; Peterborough Junior Alliance Under 12 Division 1: Deeping Rangers 10 v 3 Spalding Athletic
Rangers followed up their opening day win against champions ICA with this high scoring victory over newly promoted Spalding. Having scored his 100th competitive goal last week, Dan Evans again showed that he is going to be difficult to contain this season as he ran in 5 trademark goals. New signing Daniel Bandaranaike opened his account after 5 minutes but the Deeping defence were then caught napping a few minutes later to gift Spalding an equaliser. In an attack minded game goals continued to be traded until Deeping imposed themselves on the contest. Troy Waters and then Luke Wheeler scored sublime 20 yarders and with Evans also getting in on the act Rangers had a comfortable 5-2 advantage at the break. Deeping were dominant in the second half and further goals followed from Jonny Landin and Liam Buttery. Two wins out of 2 and Rangers look set for another solid season.
Season 2004/05
The transition to 11-a-side meant it was a busy summer as far as new signings are concerned. The squad are pleased to welcome, Troy Waters, Chayto Nadin and Sam Bush.
Full Squad: Brad James, Tom Thurston (captain), Jonny Landin, Jason Horsefield, Chayto Nadin, Sam Bush, Troy Waters, Nick Harrold, Steffan Ladley, Liam Buttery, Jacob Peters, Ben Leisner, Daniel Evans, Daniel Lovesey.
13 March Deeping Rangers 3 v 0 Eye United
Rangers signed off their first 11-a-side campaign with a fine win that secured second place. Having already played two evenly contested games against Eye this one followed much the same pattern with territorial advantage shared for the majority of the match. It took until the 20th minute for Deeping to open the scoring when Dan Evans latched onto an excellent through ball to finish in style. This took Evans’ tally to 27 league and cup goals for the season and he once again finished as top scorer. For the remainder of the half it was the visitors who did most of the pressing and Deepings defence had to show why they’ve only conceded twice in six league games since the turn of the year with Bush, Thurston, Landin, Peters and keeper Brad James again having excellent matches. The second half mirrored the first with neither side looking like scoring but eventually Dan Lovesey, who up until then had been well marshalled by Eye’s commanding centre backs, found himself with time and space to run through and score. With the last kick of the game Jonny Landin managed to squeeze a low shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner to round things off. Manager Chris Lovesey was quick to praise the achievements of his side, “The lads have performed superbly all season and to only drop 11 points is a great achievement. In both league and cup we’ve proved that on our day we are a match for anyone in this age group. We certainly won’t be resting on ur laurels, our squad was kept quite small this season and we were caught short on a couple of occasions but I’ll be looking to add one or two quality signings in the summer to ensure we maintain the progress made so far.”
Deeping: James, Bush, Landin, Thurston (capt), Peters, Ladley, Harrold, Waters, Buttery, Leisner, Evans, Lovesey, Nadin.
6 March Crowland 1 v 3 Deeping Rangers
Although only able to field 10 fit players, Chris Lovesey’s side recovered from the disappointment of their cup defeat last week to put themselves on the brink of securing second spot. Against a much improved Crowland side Rangers showed great determination to overcome the numerical disadvantage and played some very good football in the process. Dan Lovesey took his tally to 20 league and cup goals with a smart finish after 10 minutes and this was quickly followed by a rare Tom Thurston effort when he cleverly hooked in from a corner. Deeping had several chances to extend their lead with Lovesey and the influential Leisner both hitting the woodwork but the home side got themselves back into it when Cutts finished well. The second half followed the same pattern with the visitors creating some excellent opportunities without being able to finish and they could easily have been made to pay for this but for some solid defending from Landin, Thurston and Horsefield. Ben Leisner calmed Deepings nerves when he capped a fine all round performance with a cracking 20 yarder. Manager Lovesey was quick to praise the overall team performance, “After last weeks disappointment it looked like the omens were against us again but the boys responded superbly and everyone dug in for each other. Hopefully we can secure second spot in our final game and that would round off a marvellous first season at 11-a-side. I’d also like to pass on my congratulations to ICA who have run out worthy winners of the league.”
Deeping Squad: Brad James, Jason Horsefield, Tom Thurston (capt), Jonny Landin, Nick Harrold, Steff Ladley, Liam Buttery, Ben Leisner, Dan Evans, Dan Lovesey.
13 February Deeping Rangers 4 v 1 Sawtry Colts
In blustery conditions this was one of Rangers finest all round performances of the season and maintained their unbeaten home record. From the kick off the passing was exceptional and when Steff Ladley pounced on a loose ball to open the scoring the tone for the rest of the game was set. Deepings midfield domination was key to the outcome where Liam Buttery, Nick Harrold, Jacob Peters and Ladley had commanding games. After 15 minutes Deeping were two up when Dan Lovesey finished off fine team work by smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Before half time it was 3-0 when, following more good approach work, Dan Evans finished confidently. Rangers maintained their form in the second half and Lovesey capped a fine display when he skipped past 3 Sawtry defenders on the right wing before cutting into the box to beat the keeper in style. It could have been more as Buttery and Bush both fashioned good opportunities. As the game entered the final few minutes Collins scored a consolation for the visitors. With two league games remaining Rangers look on course to secure second spot.
30 January Deeping Rangers 3 v 0 Oundle Jaguars
Rangers came out on top in this 2nd v 3rd clash which also acted as a rehearsal for the forthcoming league cup semi-final. Oundle had narrowly edged the first meeting of the teams this season but Deeping never looked like relinquishing their unbeaten home record. In what was an excellent team performance the visitors were rarely able to trouble the Rangers defence where Sam Bush, Jonny Landin, Tom Thurston and Jacob Peters were again commanding. This gave the midfield the platform to open up the Oundle back line with some penetrating passes. After 15 minutes Ben Leisner played a fine cross field pass to Steff Ladley who took the ball in his path before expertly drilling a shot into the far corner from 15 yards. After a quiet couple of weeks by his high standards, Dan Evans got back on the scoring trail by converting the second five minutes later. Early in the second half skipper Thurston, who had been troubled by a thigh injury, made way for Jason Horsefield who was equally solid. Rangers always looked likely to extend their lead and when Evans was upended in the box Jonny Landin made no mistake from the spot. A fine win for Deeping which sets things up nicely for the cup match at Oundle in February.
23 January Peterborough Junior Alliance Under 11 League Cup Quarter Final Eye United 4 v 9 Deeping Rangers (after extra time. 4-4 after normal time)
This was a thrilling cup tie which was a credit to both teams effort and committment although the final result was very harsh on the home team. Despite having the best of the early possession Rangers, as has happened on several occasions this season, made life difficult for themselves by conceding two early goals. However, quick fire responses from Daniel Lovesey and Liam Buttery pulled Deeping level. This set the tone for the rest of the game as Eye immediately regained the lead before half time.
The second half saw no let up in the action and Ben Leisner levelled things once again with a superb volley from 20 yards which gave the keeper no chance. Rangers then took the lead for the first time when Lovesey scrambled the ball in from close range. However, Eye responded magnificently and with 5 minutes remaining they broke away to make it 4-4 and take the tie into extra time.
Both teams had played their part in a memorable cup tie and the players now had to muster the energy for 20 minutes extra time and what a bizarre 20 minutes it was. As even as the first 60 minutes was, the extra period was the complete opposite. Buttery grabbed his second to give Deeping the advantage and this seemed to spur Rangers on and have the reverse effect on Eye who seemed to have the energy sapped out of them. Lovesey quickly added his third before a brace from Ladley and a fine cross shot from Jacob Peters completed the scoring. This was anything but a one-sided game despite the final score and everyone involved can be proud of their efforts. Rangers now have another titanic battle in store against Oundle in the semi-final.
16 January Boston 0 v 1 Deeping Rangers
In a game of few clear cut chances Rangers edged this encounter thanks to another piece of individual brilliance from Jacob Peters. The home side came closest to scoring in the opening stages when a 20 yard free kick crashed off the bar. Steffan Ladley almost finished off a fine move for Deeping but Hipwell in the Boston goal, who was commanding throughout, just managed to touch the shot round the post. So a goalless first half and it looked like it might stay that way until Deeping were awarded a free kick in a similar place to Boston’s effort. Peters, who is making a habit of scoring spectacular goals of late, stepped up and cracked a swerving shot into the roof of the net. Deeping had a couple of chances to extend their lead, Sam Bush cleverly chipping the advancing keeper only to see a defender clear and Tom Thurston was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post. A hard fought victory which maintains Deepings place in the top two.
9 January Deeping Rangers 2 v 0 Netherton Kestrels
In blustery conditions at Outgang Road, Rangers managed to edge a tight game where chances were not surprisingly few and far between. Both defences were on top in the early stages with Deeping having the better of it territorially without threatening the Netherton goal. However, as has happened on a couple of occasions this season it took a classy strike from Jacob Peters to break the deadlock, the ball breaking to him just outside the area and he drove it into the top corner. Netherton had a golden opportunity to equalise before the break when they were awarded a penalty but Bradley James made a fine save. As conditions worsened in the second half it looked like it would remain 1-0 but with 10 minutes left Troy Waters played a perfectly weighted pass into Dan Lovesey’s path and he made no mistake from 10 yards.
Deeping Squad: Brad James, Sam Bush, Tom Thurston, Jonny Landin, Chayto Nadin, Nick Harrold, Steff Ladley, Jacob Peters, Ben Leisner, Dan Evans, Dan Lovesey, Troy Waters, Liam Buttery, Jason Horsefield.
6 December Abbey Blues 1 v 3 Deeping Rangers
Following last weeks 2-1 defeat at Eye, Rangers responded in the best possible way with a fine all round performance to secure the double over Abbey. After a cagey start with neither side looking likely to break the deadlock it took a piece of Jacob Peters magic to bring the game to life. Picking the ball up 25 yards out, Peters made room for himself before unleashing one of his trademark left foot thunderbolts which gave the keeper no chance. This sparked Deeping into life and they started to play some bright football. It wasn’t long before the lead was doubled, Steffan Ladley cooly finishing off a good move from 8 yards. Deeping were again in the ascendancy at the start of the second half and could have extended their lead on several occasions but a long clearance by Abbey caused uncertainty in the Rangers defence and the Blues striker just beat Brad James to the ball to make it 2-1. Abbey then enjoyed their best spell of the game but Deeping’s defence stood firm with birthday boy Sam Bush getting in some particularly telling interceptions. Daniel Lovesey put the game out of Abbey’s reach with 10 minutes left when his cross-cum-shot from the by-line eluded the keeper.
21 November Sawtry Colts 1 v 6 Deeping Rangers
The final scoreline was a bit harsh on Sawtry who played their part in an entertaining game which in the early stages looked like it could go either way. The home team had the better of the opening exchanges and had an early goal ruled out for offside. Deeping took a while to get into their stride but took the lead following a trademark solo run from Daniel Evans. Within minutes Sawtry had deservedly levelled when they caught Rangers on the counter attack. Brad James made an excellent save from the initial shot but Sawtry’s striker reacted quickest to the rebound to fire home. Level at half time and it remained that way until 10 minutes into the second half. Daniel Lovesey’s persistence was rewarded when he rounded the keeper to score from an acute angle. As the half wore on Deeping started to take control and Jacob Peters made it 3-1 when he fired in a cracking free kick from all of 25 yards. Another mazy run from Lovesey ended with him being brought down in the box and Jonny Landin confidently despatched the resulting penalty. Troy Waters and Liam Buttery were now dictating things in midfield and both rounded off fine performances by getting in on the scoring act. Waters showing great footwork and close control to dance past the Sawtry defence and keeper before walking the ball into the net. Buttery rounded things off when he pounced on a loose ball to hammer home from 10 yards.
14 November League Cup 2nd Round ICA Juventus White 0 v 7 Deeping Rangers
Deeping progressed to the quarter finals after easing past a spirited ICA team. Steffan Ladley was pushed into a more forward role and he made the most of it by bagging a fine hat-trick. His first came in the opening minutes when he calmly found the corner of the net despite the attentions of several defenders. ICA made life difficult for Deeping and it took some time before the cushion of a second goal arrived, one of the home defenders unluckily deflecting a cross into his own net. The two goal advantage seemed to settle the game down and Deeping were able to play a bit more football and it wasn’t long before Ladley had completed his hat trick with two in quick succession. Rangers dominated the second half and further goals followed from Evans and Lovesey before skipper Tom Thurston rounded things off with a fine strike from 20 yards. ICA’s keeper had an excellent game and he made several brave saves including one sublime leap to push a Ben Leisner pile driver against the bar.
7 November Deeping Rangers 10 v 0 Crowland
After defeat in their last game Deeping bounced back in emphatic style. Jacob Peters set the tone in the opening minutes with a superbly struck effort from 20 yards and he then became provider when he picked out Daniel Lovesey who headed home from close range. Daniel Evans wasn’t to be outdone as he recorded his 3rd hat trick of the season to take his tally to 16 league goals. Steffan Ladley opened his account for the seaosn with two well struck efforts and Liam Buttery’s fine solo run was rewarded with a smart finish. Jonny Landin scored from the spot and Sam Bush bagged his first since joining Deeping when he was in the right place to finish off a well worked move.
24 October Oundle Jags 2 v 1 Deeping Rangers Under 11s
Deeping slipped to their first defeat of the season against one of their nearest challengers. Rangers made a sluggish start and were two down within the first ten minutes as the defence struggled to cope with Oundles long ball approach. For the remainder of the half the game became congested in midfield, neither team being able to gain any territorial advantage. However, in a rare attack Steffan Ladley worked some space on the edge of the area and his low cross was hooked in from close range by Daniel Lovesey to bring Deeping back into it. Deeping had the better of things in the second half and the introduction of Liam Buttery added some much needed bite to the midfield. Although chances were still few and far between Deeping were unlucky to have an equaliser ruled out after Daniel Evans’ run from just inside the oppositions half saw him waltz through the Oundle defence to finish in style only to have the goal ruled out after the linseman had mysteriously flagged for an earlier incident. Despite having the majority of possession Rangers couldn’t grab a second as Oundle held on.
Sunday 17 October – Deeping Rangers 3 v 0 ICA Juventus Black
On paper this looked like a cracking cup tie between two sides currently lying 1st and 2nd in Division 1 and so it proved. At a soggy Outgang Road both teams played some excellent football and it was Deepings more clinical finishing and resolute defending that proved to be the difference. After 10 minutes a fine Liam Buttery through ball found Daniel Evans in space and he fired home. Evans quickly followed this up with his second. As ICA pushed to gain the initiative Deepings defence showed why they are such a hard nut to crack, with Tom Thurston, Jonny Landin, Sam Bush and Jacob Peters all making timely interceptions. Brad James’ handling was again excellent in the wet conditions. Shortly after the interval Deeping scored a crucial third. Jonny Landin’s 20 yard free kick hit the post and Troy Waters cooly slotted home the rebound from an acute angle. In the closing stages ICA had the better of the chances but couldn’t convert.
