Under 18

Wednesday 12 September –   RAMPANT RANGERS  –  Deeping Rangers U18’s        8      St Ives U18’s    1

Rangers U18’s had their first victory of the season as they ran riot over their visitors St Ives. As early as the 5thminute Lewis Leckie put the home side in front, and on 28 minutes he scored his second. At this point the traffic was all one way, and Rangers were in total control. On 35 minutes the St Ives custodian made a fine double save to deny Deeping and keep his side in the game, and they then mounted a counter attack. At the other end the St Ives no8 lost his marker and went one on one with Rangers keeper Robbie Virgin, who managed to close the striker down before he could shoot. Just before half time Adam Goodger made it 3 – 0 with a super goal from an acute angle. The second half was 8 minutes old when Tom Flatters got on the score sheet for Rangers and made it 4 – 0. Deeping then seemed to go to sleep as the vistors went straight up the other end and scored a consolation goal to give themselves a lifeline. Deeping soon recovered and on 55 minutes they were 5 – 1 up. The St Ives keeper did well to save a shot, but the loose ball fell to Cardin Pierre-Liverpool who was waiting at the far post to poke the ball in. Rangers then made a change taking off Ciaran Holt, and bringing on Spencer Tinkler. On 67 minutes they made a second change when Cardin Pierre-Liverpool was taken off to be replaced by Matt Howitt.

Deeping continued to pour forward swinging good balls into the St Ives penalty area. On 70 minutes Alex Goumour made it 6 – 1 and Robbie Virgin in the Deeping goal was almost a spectator at this point. Five minutes later Goumour scored his second of the game to make it 7 – 1.Rangers then made another change. Joe Fisher came on in place of Adam Goodger. With 10 minutes remaining the rout was completed with a goal from Nicky Butler. In the dieing minutes Lewis Leckie had a chance to score his hat trick, but the St Ives keeper did well to block the shot with his body.

Deeping Rangers: Robbie Virgin, Adam Goodger (Joe Fisher), Dan Atyes, Ciaran Holt (Spencer Tinkler), Sean Evans, James Crowson, Alex Goumour, Nicky Butler, Lewis Leckie, Cardin Pierre-Liverpool (Matt Howitt), Tom Flatters. Subs not used: Chris Pike, James Burley.

5th Sept 07   Deeping Rangers U18’s       3           St Neots U18’s       3

Rangers new look U18’s started their League campaign with a home match against St Neots. Deeping were soon on the attack and Lewis Leckie should have scored in the 9th minute, but he fired over the bar from close range. Ten minutes later Leckie had another chance, but again blasted his shot over from close range. It was only a matter of time, and on the half hour Leckie finally broke the deadlock to fire Rangers in front. The lead was short lived and within a minute of the restart St Neots had equalised. The second half was 5 minutes old when Leckie claimed his second to put Rangers back in front, but again they went to sleep and the visitors equalised a minute later. This gave the visitors added impetus and they pressed again for another goal forcing Rangers custodian Robbie Virgin to make a good save when the ball was dipping under the bar. On the hour Virgin again saved well, but he was unable to hold the ball, and a St Neots player was on hand to poke it into the net and give them the lead. Rangers made a substitution taking Spencer Tinkler off and bringing on Joe Fisher. Deeping soon won a penalty when Cardin Pierce-Liverpool was brought down in the St Neots box. Cardin stepped up for the spot kick and slammed the ball into the net to the delight of the home fans. Rangers pressed for a winner in the last 10 minutes but could not make a breakthrough, and had to settle for a point at full time.

Deeping Rangers: Robbie Virgin, Adam Goodger, Chris Pike, Sean Evans, James Burley, Spencer Tinkler (Joe Fisher), Tom Flatters, Nicky Butler, Lewis Leckie, Cardin Pierre-Liverpool, Alex Goumour. Subs not used: Dexter Stevens, Michael Senior, James Crowson.

Deeping Rangers U’18’s 5 Bourne U18’s 1

This was the second round of the Ridgeons Youth League Cup and had all the ingredients of a local derby as these two neighbouring teams met at Outgang Road. Bourne started the brighter team and they looked dangerous on the break. It was Deeping however that scored first from a counter attack when Steven Colangelo chipped ex-Rangers custodian Ben Derbyshire in the Bourne goal. The Rangers keeper later pulled off a good save to keep his side in the game before Bourne equalised with five minutes to half time. Even then Deeping had a chance to retake the lead but Liam Palmer failed to make contact with the ball went it came through a crowd of legs, and with the goal at his mercy. The second half started with the Deeping supporters expecting an onslaught from the visitors, but this never came. Rangers took control of the game from the start of the second half, and continued to dominate throughout. Further goals came from Steven Colangelo again, Liam Palmer, Daniel Jacobs and Alex Brookbank to seal victory on a good night for Deeping

Deeping Rangers U18’s 4 March U18’s 0 30/11/2005

Deeping totally dominated this game and took the lead after 8 minutes courtosy of a Liam Palmer goal. Sixteen minutes later the same player had doubled the lead. The first half ended with the hosts 2 -0 in front, with the Rangers keeper practically a spectator. He did not have to make a save in the first half. The second half started with the Hares showing more aggression, but Palmer was denied his hat trick early on. Unfortunately he was substituted before he could get his third goal having pulled up with cramp. On 65 minutes Dan Jacobs extended the lead for Deeping, but the visitors refused to give up and their keeper continued to marshall his defence throughout the game. With the last kick of the game Luke Avis scored no 4 to complete a good day at the office for Deeping Rangers U18’s

1 February 2006 Deeping Rangers U18’s 1 Stotfold U18’s 3

Deeping were dumped out of the Ridgeons Youth Cup in the third round by Stotfold on a freezing night at Outgang Road. The fact that Rangers had not played a competitive game for five weeks showed on the night as the visitors were able to find plenty of space when they attacked. In the 19th minute Stotfold had a penalty appeal turned down when their player was felled by the Deeping keeper, but two minutes later the hosts were awarded a penalty at the other end. The spot kick was taken by Garford, who wasted the chance by hitting the shot wide. Two minutes later things got worse for the hosts when the Deeping keeper was stretchered off with a knee injury to be replaced between the sticks by Alex Brockbank. On the half hour the visitors won a corner, which was well taken, with a Stotfold player waiting unmarked at the far post to head in the ball. Just before half time Stotfold scored again to double their lead. In the second half it went from bad to worse for Rangers as Liam Palmer was carried off injured forcing another enforced change on manager Dave Vaughan. On 65 minutes Deeping won a corner with the ball coming off a Stotfold player into the net to reduce the arrears. Two minutes later the scores should have been level when the visitors cleared the ball off the line. With 10 minutes remaining Rangers were reduced to 10 men when a player was sent for dissent. Three minutes later, with the hosts now stretched in defence Stotfold won a penalty, and they made no mistake with the spot kick to re-establish the 2 goal lead. The home fans were glad to hear the final whistle to end a poor performance from Rangers U18’s on a freezing cold night

Blackstones U18’s 2 Deeping Rangers U18’s 4

This was a chance for Deeping to close the gap on second placed Blackstones in the Ridgeons Youth League North Division. The game started with Deeping playing with the benefit of the stiff breeze. On 15 minutes Miles Hunter saw his shot gathered by the Stones keeper who failed to hold the ball, which finished in the back of the net to give the visitors an early lead. This was short lived however as four minutes later the Rangers keeper brought down a Blackstones player for a penalty. The spot kick was duly dispatched into the bottom right corner to bring the scores level. The pace of the game at this point was hectic, and Deeping should have taken the lead five minutes later but good goalkeeping saw the ball tipped over the bar. On 22 minutes Rangers had a penalty appeal dismissed. On the half hour Deeping won a freekick 25 yards out to the right of the Stones goal which Dan Jacobs hit perfectly giving the Stones keeper no chance. Nine minutes later Deeping got their third when Steve Colangelo crossed for Miles Hunter to score again. Just before half time Dan Drain passed to Miles Hunter who sprang the offside trap to go one on one with the Blackstones keeper and chip the ball into the net for his hat-trick and Deeping’s fourth. This gave the visitors a 3 goal cushion at half time. In the second half Blackstones had the benefit of the wind and they looked a better side as they kept the Deeping keeper busy. They were eventually rewarded 8 minutes from time when a Stones player slipped his marker and chipped the Rangers keeper to make it 2 – 4. Blackstones then pressed forward looking for another goal, but Deeping defended well and were determined not to let the hosts play better football. As time ticked away both sides created chances but could not find the back of the net. The game ended with Deeping winning 2 – 4 and the three points takes them into 4th place only two points behind the leaders Ely City.

Season 2004/05

In Season 2004/5 Deeping came fourth in the League. After beating Lowestoft Town on on 8 March 2005 by 3 – 1 on penalties, after the game ended 2-2, we now have a final to look forward to against Stotfold.

23 November Deeping Rangers U18’s 3 Harrowby U18’s 0

Deepings U18 side extracted revenge on Harrowby U18’s for the defeat inflicted on their first team by the Harrowby first team in the previous week. The first half was played at a cracking pace, and within 8 minutes Quinney had put Rangers in front with the first of his two goals on the night. From the restart Harrowby pressed forward with a good attack but poor finishing when they blasted over the Deeping goal. Rangers replied with a similar chance at the other end but could not do any better. On the half hour Harrowby were awarded a freekick in dangerous territory, and this produced a cracking save from the Deeping custodian. The second half started at a much slower pace as both sides calmed down to play more passing football. Although Deeping kicked off the second period the first shot in that half fell to Harrowby on 55 minutes, straight at the keeper. Ten minutes later Rangers should have doubled their lead when they produced good work down the right hand side followed by a pass across goal, but the waiting Deeping player missed the ball and a chance was lost. A minute later they made amends when Quinney netted his second goal of the night. Rangers were 2 – 0 up. In the final minute of the game a long range strike by Deepings No 14 Tony Wooding crashed into the back of the net to complete the rout at 3 -0.

16 February Deeping Rangers U18’s 2 Bourne U18’s 3

This local derby was played with passion from both sides. On 8 minutes the Bourne keeper was forced to make a goal line clearance. Four minutes later Deepings no.10 Joe Townsend was brought down in the Bourne box for a penalty. Beeby’s spot kick was saved by the Bourne custodian, but Aaron Last reacted quickest to the rebound to put the ball into the net for the hosts. On the half hour Joe Townsend beat the off-side trap to power his angled shot into the Bourne net to give Deeping a 2 – 0 lead. It should have been game over at this point, but the visitors refused to give up and on 40 minutes Bourne’s No 9 chipped Ben Derbyshire in the Deeping goal to make it 2 – 1.

Rangers came out in the second half hoping to score an early goal to restore the 2 goal cushion, and within 4 minutes they were awarded a free kick just outside the Bourne area. The Bourne keeper failed to hold the ball, but nobody was on hand to put the ball in the net. Three minutes later Bourne equalised from a corner. On 65 minutes Bourne should have had another but the shot went across the goal with nobody to finish it off. Three minutes later Deeping were on the attack and a Rangers player rounded the Bourne keeper, but failed to look up when he placed his shot. He hit a gentle tap thinking it would go in the net, but a Bourne player was on hand to clear the shot. On 80 minutes Rangers were awarded a free kick 20 yards out which was well taken, but the Bourne keeper stretched to his left to push the ball out. Five minutes later Bourne scored again to take the lead 2 – 3. Deeping still had a chance right at the end when they got behind the Bourne defence but their player again failed to look up and placed his shot wide when faced with an open goal. Deeping were the better team in the first half and played some god football, but they could not reproduce the same passion in the second half.

8 March home to Lowestoft in the Eastern Youth League Cup – won 3-1 on penalties after game ended 2-2 (scorers Patterson, Quinney)

16 March Deeping Rangers U18’s 2 Grantham Town U18’s 0

Anybody watching this game at Outgang Road could be forgiven for thinking it was West Ham United v Newcastle as Deeping Rangers lined up in claret and blue, with Grantham in black and white stripes. Rangers had their first chance after only 4 minutes when they won a corner. This set the tone for the half as they created chance after chance but could not finish. Grantham were forced to make a substitution after 25 minutes when the injured Tom Shaw was taken off to be replaced with Ross Brown. Just before half time Deeping made the breakthrough. They again won a corner, and the ball was passed well into the box where it was met by the head of Scott Quinney who hit a looping header over Lee Deardon to put the hosts in front.

The second half continued in much the same vain with Ben Derbyshire in the Rangers goal not having to make a difficult save, and Deeping creating chances at the other end. On 50 minutes Grantham were again forced to make a substitution when Paul Chappell was injured. he was replaced by Elliott Cort. On 69 minutes Rangers extended their lead when a cross was delivered from open play into the Grantham box for Scott Quinney to head in his second of the match. At this point Deeping were in total control and the management team decided to give players who do not normally play a run out. They therefore made a double substitution when Steven Colanglo came on for Scott Quinney, and Anthony Wells came on for Chris Beeby. Deeping continued to press forward and create chances, but could not breach the Grantham defence a third time, and so settled for the 3 points with a 2 – 0 win.

Deeping Rangers – Ben Derbyshire, Glenn Vaughan, Matt Holland, Tim Harris, David Burton- Jones, James Hindle, Chris Beeby, Adriano Staffieri, Scott Quinney, Joe Townsend, Tony Wooding, Anthony Wells, Dan Joacob, Steven Colanglo, Liam Palmer, Bobby Patterson

24 March 2005 Deeping Rangers U18’s 6 March U18’s 0

The small band of Rangers fans watching this game left on a high as their team played good passing football throughout as well as scoring 6 goals. Five minutes into the game Shane Knight nearly put March ahead when he was in a tackle with Rangers custodian Ben Derbyshire . His shot went over from an acute angle, but Ben was left with a cut glove and had to go off with a hand injury that needed stitches. He was replaced by James Hindle moving into goal, and Tim Harris took his place in midfield. This incident was then followed by a period of Deeping pressure, and this set the tone for the rest of the game. On 25 minutes Adriano Staffieri dribbled the ball into the March box, and shot into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead. Seven minutes later it was Chris Beeby’s turn to score from close quarters after a good build up from Deeping. At this point Rangers were in total control. Just before half time March were reduced to 10 men when James Quinn hobbled off with a torn muscle, and they had no reserves to bring on. On 45 minutes Chris Anker in the March goal failed to hold a shot and the ball spilled into the path of Scott Quinney to put Rangers 3 – 0 up at half time.

The second half continued in the same vain with Deeping in total control and playing good passing football with the ball at their feet. Ten minutes into the half the hosts had a goal disallowed for offside, but 5 minutes later Tim Harris made it 4 – 0 with an overhead kick. On 65 minutes Rangers made a double substitution when Matt Holland and Joe Townsend were taken off to be replaced by David Burton-Jones and Steven Colanglo. On 70 minutes Adriano Staffieri dribbled the ball into the March penalty area, passed to Scott Qinney, who made no mistake drilling the ball past Chris Anker for goal number 5. Rangers were not finished and five minutes later substitute Steven Colanglo chipped the advancing March keeper for goal number 6. The visitors continued to battle and never gave up but with 10 minutes remaining they were reduced to 9 men when Dane Moore was shown a red card for a bad foul. The game at this point was all but over and the result was never in doubt.

This was a real treat for the Deeping fans who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and were relieved that substitute keeper James Hindle was not tested all night.

Deeping Rangers – Ben Derbyshire, Glenn Vaughan, Matt Holland, Bobby Patterson, Joe Townsend, James Hindle, Chris Beeby, Aaron Last, Scott Quinney, Adriano Staffieri, Tony Wooding, Tim Harris, David Burton-Jones, Steven Colanglo.
